Kimono Care Guide
Caring for Authentic Kimono Fabric
Authentic vintage Japanese kimono is made using silk. They are a delicate, precious material. It has often been stored, worn, and preserved for decades before being reconstructed into your abaya or hijab. Proper care will ensure it lasts for many more years.
General Rules
- Dry cleaning is strongly recommended for all kimono abayas and hijabs.
- If dry cleaning is not possible, hand wash only — never machine wash.
- Always wash separately. Never wash with other garments.
- Use cold water only. Hot water will damage silk fibres and cause colours to bleed.
- Use a mild, pH-neutral detergent designed for delicate fabrics.
Washing by Hand
- Fill a basin with cold water and a small amount of mild detergent.
- Submerge the garment gently. Do not rub, wring, or scrub.
- Swirl gently for 1–2 minutes.
- Rinse thoroughly with cold water until all detergent is removed.
- Do not wring. Press gently against the basin to remove excess water.
- Lay flat or hang to dry in shade. Never dry in direct sunlight — this will fade the colours.
Ironing
- Do not iron directly on the kimono fabric.
- If ironing is necessary, place a thin cloth between the iron and the fabric.
- Use the lowest heat setting.
- Steam ironing is not recommended for vintage silk.
Storage
- Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
- Do not store in plastic bags — use a breathable fabric bag or wrap in acid-free tissue paper.
- Avoid hanging for long periods, as this can stretch the fabric. Fold and store flat where possible.
Kimono Handbags
Kimono handbags are made from the same authentic vintage silk and require the same level of care as garments. In addition, please note the following:
- Do not submerge the bag in water. Spot clean the fabric surface only using a lightly damp cloth with mild detergent.
- For leather straps and handles, wipe with a dry or slightly damp cloth. Do not use water or cleaning products directly on leather.
- Store the bag stuffed with tissue paper to help it retain its shape.
- Keep away from moisture, humidity, and direct sunlight when storing.
Reversible Bags
Some kimono handbags feature a reversible design — a kimono silk outer side and a patterned cotton inner side. To reverse the bag:
- Remove the shoulder strap if attached.
- Open the clasp fully.
- Carefully remove any internal hardware or frame components if applicable.
- Turn the bag inside out gently, taking care not to stress the seams.
- Reattach the hardware and strap once reversed.
Note: the reversible function is not designed for frequent switching. We recommend choosing your preferred side for regular use and reversing only occasionally.
Important Notes
- Colours in vintage kimono fabric may vary slightly from screen to real life due to the age and natural dye processes of the original textile.
- Minor variations in pattern placement are a natural characteristic of handcrafted and vintage pieces — not a defect.
